HERBS & FLOWERS"D-E-F"
DRAGON FRUIT CACTUS
(Night Blooming Cereus)
Hylocereus Undatus
A vine-like climbing cactus with flowers that  bloom overnight
and usually wilt by the morning. They rely on nocturnal
pollinators such as bats or moths for fertilization. A second plant
is needed to insure fertilization. However, the plants can flower
between three and six times in a year depending on growing
conditions. Like other cacti, if a healthy piece of the stem is
broken off, it may take root in soil and become its own plant. The
dragon fruit sets 30–50 days after flowering and can sometimes
have 5-6 cycles of harvests per year. The night blooming cereus
may very well seem unruly, but it is certainly not without
redeeming value. Not only does it produce a magnificent flower
and delicious fruit, but it also has important medicinal qualities. It
can be a potent heart medicine.

EPHEDRA (MA HUANG)
Ephedra sinica
PERENNIAL-ZONES 6-8
SUN
Mature height and width of 3 feet.
Ma huang is a powerful stimulant herb containing the alkaloid
ephedrine, the main inspiration for today’s popular over-the-
counter antihistamine drugs. Purified ephedrine is very potent,
and the practice of adding it to diet formulas is potentially
dangerous because ephedrine can raise blood pressure if used
over a long period, and can even cause cardiac arrythmias.
However, when used in its native, non-purified form, the dried
herb is much safer and very popular in traditional Chinese
medicine for dispersing conditions characterized by wind and
cold, such as chills, fever, headache, cough and wheezing.

honey and butter it was used to treat respiratory
problems including tuberculosis. But in the future it is expected that
