(Bugleweed) Excellent spreading groundcover featuring
colorful burgundy tinged pale green and cream variegated
foliage and deep blue flower spikes. Forms a dense, carpet-
like mat, even in shady areas!
Bugle has a long history of use as a wound herb and,
although little used today, it is still considered very useful
in arresting haemorrhages and is also used in the treatment
of coughs and spitting of blood in incipient consumption.
The plant contains digitalis-like substances  and is thought
to possess heart tonic properties. It has also been considered
good for the treatment of excessive alcohol intake. The
whole plant is aromatic, astringent and bitter. It is widely
used in various preparations against throat irritations and
especially in the treatment of mouth ulcers.

Beautiful clear purple-blue flowers to the garden in June and July. It has
been used as a diuretic, and to induce perspiration. The root decoction
was thought to have blood cleansing action. Said to be effective when
applied topically for ulcers and injuries to the skin. The plant is a
biennial, preferring dry, sandy soil and full sun. Hardy through a wide
range of zones and generously self-seeding, an individual plant can
produce 900 seeds. Although sometimes an unwanted volunteer in
hayfields, it is indispensable in hummingbird and bee gardens, where the
lovely trumpet-shaped flowers will easily attract these busy visitors.
